The legend of Fafe's justice

The legend of Fafe's Justice is an elogy of popular justice. One of the largest referential symbols of Fafe, it is seen as the spirit and true ex-libris of this region, and was celebrated on a city monument.

The most diffused version from the beginning of the 19th century was the subject of a long poem from Inocêncio Carneiro de Sá, "O Barão de Espalha brasas"( rough translation:"the baron of spread ashes"). It narrates an episode, registered in the 18th century and protagonized by Viscount of Moreira de Rei, an influent politician in the district and a man of good, but not one to take an offence.

Deputy to the court, had arrived late to a session of that monarchic organization, and was rudely censured by a marquis, also deputy, that reach the level of calling him a "repulsive dog". The Viscont didn't react and made an impression that he didn't listened to the improper comment and was tranquil during the entire session, but, when it ended, he went to talk with the petulant marquis, reprehending the marquis for the unkind words that were directed at him. Instead of apologizing himself, the marquis throws provocatorily his gloves at the viscount's face, summoning a duel.

The person challenged had the right to choose the weapons, and when everyone thought that he would prefer the swords or pistols, as it was usual at that time, the viscount showed up to the challenge with two solid staffs. The marquis didn't know how to fight with such a rustic weapon, but the viscount, connoisseur of the art of jogo do pau, traditional of that region, spanked his opposition. The populars, laughing at that event, started to claim, "hurrey!! to Fafe's Fustice"

Another occasion narrates the consequences of a marriage proposal by a man from Lisbon(the capital). That when the fiance(man) refused to marry, the father of the girl persuited the man and apllied him the Fafe's Justice.

The monument to Fafe's Justice, evocative of this tradition, is of the authorship of Eduardo Tavares, inaugurated in August 23 of 1981 in Rua João XXIII of that city. It consists of a statue representing a man hitting another with a stick and was placed in the back of Fafe's tribunal, insinuation that when the official justice fails, the popular hand shows herself.
