as the most popular Irish weapons in history were the spear then axe then bata and mainly farming tools i want to explore the staff in relation to Ireland. there are agricultural tools specific to Ireland that would make great weapons but i need to do more research and get advice from others. im learning jogo do pao at the moment and have been doing reenactment spear and dance axe for a while yet i want to do it in a true wma form and like many fight schools focus on the staff as my base but in and irish context. so can you help?
cheers

Re: irish staffs and poll arms
This is a bit of a tricky question for me, since I have only basic knowledge of fencing masters from the UK and Ireland. However, George Silver ought to be a natural choice, since he discusses, amongst other things, the quarterstaff. Also, Joseph Svetnam and Zach Wylde are good choices here.
You can read a little about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarterstaff Their manuals are available on this site, btw.
Then, there are lots of "german" and "italian" sources on staffs of various lengths, aswell as on the spear, and of course various forms of halbers and glaves. But that is another topic. I have listed a lot of sources in another thread here viewtopic.php?f=44&t=149&p=149#p149 It probably needs to be updating, but it will give you an idea.
Good luck!

Re: irish staffs and poll arms
yeah thats handy meyer seems to be everyones source of staff work. but silver seems like a good point to start from. i tried out rincegks stuff on spear and it is so similar to what i do already which is good although there is likely small nuances im missing but must keep at it.
